Many of the big companies are jumping on the blog bandwagon but what about small businesses?

All businesses could benefit from creating a blog, not because its the latest trend, but it forms the cheapest, most organic way of generating a dialogue and a deeper relationship with customers and partners.

A blog is really an inexpensive content management tool, with a built in mechanism for search engine optimization. It’s not the diary format that’s killer, it’s a thing called trackback, which is essentially a mechanism that allows a blog to automatically know when another site is talking about it, and then creates a reciprocal link. Because blogs link together so quickly and easily they become a very rich network of interconnections very quickly, this is why it’s referred to as the blogosphere sometimes.

So what should a small business talk about on its blog? Well pick a subject that is tangentially interesting to your business, if your a furniture company, you could blog about furniture design, or interior design, if your an interior designer you could talk about furniture.

A blog can bring several benefits to your company:

  • Makes your web site easier to find
  • Keeps your web site fresh, most small business sites have cobwebs for lack of content or updates
  • Creates an informal dialogue with customers and partners, can be used as a source of market research
