Great article. I edit a web based small business television channel and magazine in Australia - 'I'm Boss TV'.

There are some great articles and TV segments on podcasting and marketing for small business. Feel free to take a look and send through any feedback.

www.ImBoss.tv.

And feel free to submit any articles for consideration across any of the categories. We're always looking for content and contributors from around the globe.

I guess everything really is bigger in Texas (cue rimshot)!

Texas has a ton of people - I'm more surprised by Georgia. But when looking at these lists, it's important to remember that Overture results are often tainted by webmasters who think that they know about marketing by running rank-checking software (webposition gold, anyone?) multiple times per day through Yahoo which inflates the numbers highly.

For example, I ran a search (can't remember the exact phrase) for Internet Marketing consultants. Well, I'm not moving to Wisconsin, because apparently all the Internet Marketers moved up there. Or... there is just one really dumb one spamming Overture.

I usually doublecheck in Wordtracker or keyword discovery - but of course all this is just for brainstorming anyway.

This strikes me as a sound way to do online networking.

I'm with you; "I hope that they can grow and still maintain the good vibe. Right now it’s a lot of Seattle folks, but the model is just waiting to get taken into other cities."

The positive reinforcement aspect reminds me of the writing of Ken Blanchard, the One Minute Manager author who often talks about reinforcing the behaviour you want to see more of. And of course as you note, this is the rap on so many web sites.

Found you and your work via a comment you left at Mack's Viral Garden.

Thanks for enlarging the conversation!

I agree with all your above points. I myself have done some test and find myself in first page Google, Yahoo, and MSN results for certain 'local' key phrases while using a blog format and original content.

Too many people try to focus on too large or broad a key phrase and miss out on the boat of opportunities they could be getting if they would have focuses on a smaller targetted key phrase like a 'local' term.

I have posted what I think is a nice guide to getting into the local search results at my website at marketingop.us

I've just read a bit of this book, but it sounds good so far. I used to be of the "just work hard and you'll succeed" camp, but I have found that it takes a lot more than just hard work to actually attain goals. I read 'Think and Grow Rich' and it literally changed my life, so I have been more open to book learning since then. Thanks for the tip!

To hear someone with that level of success reinforce the need for good old fashioned relationship building gives these concepts even more credibility. Good stuff, and I love what he said about only being "as good as your last suit"!

Despite the phrase "micromarketing", I think that blogging is actually going to become more powerful than other forms of marketing, and cheaper, too! As you said, it's conversational, and people love to talk about things - good, bad, and indifferent.

I think blogging gives customers an insight into a product or service provider before they actually pay that person, and that is just smart marketing. It has been proven time and time again that people buy from people that they know, like, and trust, and blogging is an excellent way to build customer relationships!

...I just read Max Kalehof's Op-Ed on the new "Google Pontiac" TV campaign (subscribers only) and am trying not to get too jazzed too soon but wow - a television spot with footage of the google.com homepage and the tagline "Don't Take Our Word For It - Google Pontiac And Discover For Yourself" ... it's brilliant! And as Kalehof points out, it's also a huge validation moment for customer generated media (CGM)...
